A Cracking Start to 2022
Well- the Charming Charnwood' exhibition finally came down yesterday. Still with a cast on my leg and unable to weight bear, I was as much use as a chocolate teapot. Proceedings were carried out by my wonderful husband and son- thank you both for your help once again.
The exhibition has been a great successful, way more so than I could possibly have imagined- thank you to all who took time to visit the show and especially to those who will take a little bit of me home with them this week. In the end I sold a grand total of 23 pieces off the wall and a further 14 out the browser.
So- what next? I find myself in the incredibly fortunate position of having some time- time to decide what to work towards next- how exciting it that. So- watch this space and lets see where we end up.
Charming Charnwood- a Collection of Artworks by Jo Sheppard
For the past four years Quorn artist Jo Sheppard has been working towards a solo show at the Sock Gallery in Loughborough Town Hall. Originally scheduled for June 2020 the show will now finally open in November.
‘Charming Charnwood’ is set to be Jo’s biggest exhibition yet with 50 new pieces to be hung in the gallery with a further 30 mounted works available for perusal in the browser. Her inspiration has been taken from various locations, many from within the Charnwood Forest area.
The work on show will be varied, from large paintings to experimental encaustic work, fine art printmaking, drawings and a less well-known technique, ‘gouache resist’.
Jo comments “We’re so lucky where we live, right in the middle of such beautiful countryside- to me, a little artist’s paradise. I love nothing more than taking my daily walk with my dog, sketching, taking photos, and getting inspired. I find woodland walking particularly restorative, and it always sets me up for the day. My hope for the show is to demonstrate my passion for the locality which I hope will resonate with those who visit the show. Having grown up in a very flat rural Lincolnshire I have really grown to love the soft gentle hills, rocky outcrops, abundance of woodland and thoughtfully maintained landscape this area has to offer.”
It’s not all rural however, there will also be a few familiar urban and semi-rural scenes on view, such as the Sock Man, Carillon, Butter Market, and a flooded Stafford Orchard to name but a few.
The exhibition is set to run from Thursday 25th November to 8th January 2022.
The gallery will be holding a ‘Meet the Artist’ event on Thursday 9th December, from 11am to 3pm, where you will be able to talk to the artist about her work.
The gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 3pm and entry is free. Sock Gallery, Louhborough Town Hall, Loughborough, Leicestershire
More Happy Customers
It was a pleasure to visit Jo’s studio recently, seeing her extensive work and enjoying her enthusiasm. Not only did we buy the painting we’d seen online but we also picked up another, both of which we love. It’s great to support a local artist. Thank you, Jo! - Jane B, May 2021
We have now purchased five of Jo's paintings and we love the way they look in our new house. It is lovely to have paintings of much loved views of the area and the colours and detail are so much more vivid on the wall. Jo is really easy to deal with and would serious consider a commission in the future. - Kerry M, May 2021
A new venture- Zoom Evening Classes
Over the last few months I have been delivering Zoom art classes to my regular art groups- it has worked surprising well. In a couple of weeks we hope to start meeting face to face again but I’d quite like to continue delivering Zoom sessions, so have decided to start an evening class.
The classes will run on Wednesdays from 7 to 9.30
It will cost £10 a week and you can pay-as-you-go. Payment can be either cash (if you live locally- drop it through my door), cheque or bank transfer
I intend to start the classes on 12th May
The subjects covered will be general painting, drawing, collage etc.- we will look at different techniques /artists/ theories etc.
If anyone would like to join in but is unfamiliar with zoom, Id be happy to have a quick one-to-one with you to cover the basics. Its really not as scary as you would think
Please let me know if you or anyone you know may be interested, or if you would like to find out more
A selection of feedback from May 2021
'Jo's zoom sessions really keep you on track. Learnt so much about colour and technique and had a lot of fun - really enjoying them '. – Judi Y
‘During lockdown, Jo's zoom sessions have proved a stimulus to creativity. They have provided a chance to share and compare picture making with others, so that even as we are on our own at work, we have been encouraged to develop fresh approaches and to experiment with new techniques.’ – Diana C
‘Fantastic sessions … Jo constantly inspires and introduces new ways of working and ideas in her lessons so it was a real loss when we couldn’t meet physically. The Zoom sessions though work really well … easy to see demo from Jo and what others in the class are doing, whilst chatting – not having to cart big bags of paints and materials about is an added advantage. Will definitely continue to participate in Zoom sessions even when we can meet in person.‘ – Rachel F
‘The Zoom sessions have been much more successful than I anticipated. Not only can you still get one to one advice but you also benefit from hearing and seeing what everyone else is doing too. It is very sociable and you don’t need to worry about forgetting those vital materials or equipment because you are at home. Zoom is easy to use and everyone seemed to get the hang of it quickly. Jo is a great teacher. Highly recommended.’ – Kathy I
'Zoom sessions started in Lockdown, from necessity rather than choice. But they worked remarkably well. We could all see Jo's demonstrations without crowding round or craning our necks, we never realized that we'd left something at home which was needed, and we all had access to chat to Jo and each other and to ask for help or advice. And we still showed the rest of the class what we had been doing at the end of the session. Clearing up could be done afterwards. Definitely worth doing and stress-free.' – Jackie R
'Jo is a fantastic teacher. I have learnt so much from attending Jo's classes, both in the virtual and actual classes. Jo makes the classes fun and provides supportive feedback and lots of encouragement. The lessons encompass a wide range of topics and approaches, but there is always the option to use preferred materials and paint in your own style, or even to do something completely different!'' – Mo C
'You don’t need a fully equipped studio to participate in Jo’s Zoom classes, just enough space to balance a pad, a pallet & a jar of water. She is a very creative tutor & very relaxed about how you interpret the weeks theme. The classes are a lovely mindful 2 1/2 hours of creativity. Highly recommended.'' – Diane H
'I’ve loved Jo’s zooms. Jo always gives plenty of advanced information about subjects and materials so you can research and prepare when you need to. She chooses a wide range of interesting tasks that serve to build up knowledge and skills and suit all levels of ability. It’s been great to see how Jo and other members respond to the tasks. The huge range of outputs is very inspiring and you learn a lot from each other. You can ask for help at any time during the session and Jo will advise on how best to proceed if you are stuck or unsure. You soon bond with other zoomers and everyone is very supportive.'' - Helen E
'I’ve really enjoyed Zoom classes with Jo. It’s fun and we get great advice and ideas. I always look forward to the weekly sessions.'' – Karam R
'Just to let you know how much I have enjoyed the Zoom sessions. I have found them very enjoyable keeping up with everyone, and even doing some research and practice in the week.'' – Daphne T

On the Move Again!
It only feels like a short while ago that I was announcing my studio move from Clearview Business Park in Quorn to the Rosebery Community Centre in Loughborough. It was actually four years ago- how time flies when you are happily painting in your studio. I was very happy at Rosebery- a lovely quirky space with ample room for teaching, lovely people running the centre and the superb St Peters Cafe next door, where I had many working lunches. Unfortuantely the centre became another victim of the COVID pandemic and had to close in May 2020, meaning we all had to find new homes. I was delighted to find not one, but two studios- neither were quite big enough to accomodate all my arty 'stuff', but together they are perfect. An old barn, near Bradgate, is where I now produce my larger work and oil paintings. The other studio, which is slightly smaller, is where I work with my water based media and print as the washing facilities there are slightly better. Although I am unable to have open studio events at either of these locations, you can of course come to visit via an appointment, so please do contact me direct if you would like to view any of my work.

'Passing Through' will be showing at Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery, Riversley Park, Nuneaton CV11 5TU. The show runs from 6th May to 9th July . Opening times are as follows: Monday closed. Tues. - Sat. 10.30am - 4.30pm Sunday 10.30am - 4.30pm
New Studio News

Nuneaton Exhibition 'Passing Through', May 2017.
Seven artists inclusing myself and my studio buddies Nita Rao and Tony Thory will be exhibiting at the Nuneaton Art Gallery and Museum during May and June this year. The seven artist’s have collaborated to present 'Passing Through', an ongoing project (started in Loughborough) whose aim is to develope new work in response to specific places and to connect with ideas of passing time. Nuneaton epitomises the state of journeying through in a physical sense disected as it is by railway tracks, canal routes and roads, all of which bear the traces of human activity and the industry of the past. Trains are a powerful metaphor of journeying and the notion of ‘passing through’, of views glimpsed and gone forever as well as the passage of life’s journey. Each artist has produced work in their own unique style responding to the history, industry and location of Nuneaton, using particular media, and types and combinations of materials, the artists have expressed their own thoughts about the nature of the fleeting moment.

Renewal - March 2016 Exhibition in Hinckley
I am delighted to taking part in an exhibition entitled 'Renewal' at the Atkins Gallery in Hinckley this spring with Charnwoods's thriving artists' group ArtSpace Loughborough. I will be showing alongside16 other artists including painters, printmakers, sculptors, photographers, ceramicists, and textile artists.
ArtSpace is now into its 19th year, having been formed in 1997 to encourage the development of artists' careers through networking, skill sharing and making high quality contemporary artwork available to the community. The group has grown over the years and now has 25 members. Artists exhibit high quality contemporary work individually and in small groups all over the country, but come together several times a year to exhibit as a large group.
Working to the brief 'Renewal', the group have produced a rich and varied exhibition which demonstrates once again how ArtSpace encourages artists to develop their own way of looking and responding. Common themes include recycling and upcycling, inner dialogue, nature, mythology and the progression of time.
My own work includes a collection of 16 oil paintings and lino prints which look at renewal within nature and the 'circle of life' in the form of various seed capsules. From germination through to growth, bloom, fruit and demise, the plants' struggle to survive is one fraught with challenges. In its demise, however, a plant harbours seed and the opportunity for renewal, often cunningly dispersed in precious, beautiful ways.
All in all, 'Renewal' provides an excellent insight into the quality and breadth of contemporary art being produced by this exciting group. There is an effective combination of two and three dimensional work, all of which rejoice in their individuality whilst being linked by a common theme. 'Renewal' exhibition. Atkins Gallery, Hinckley. Thursday 4th March to 26th March 2016. Opening times Mon to Sat- 10.00am to 4.00pm. If you would like further information on ArtSpace Loughborough, please email mail@artspace-lboro.co.uk or visit the website www.artspace-lboro.co.uk.
